Ekta Bhyan is a Para-athlete with an inspirational story to tell. After being involved in a road accident that left her lower limbs completely paralyzed and her upper limbs partially paralyzed, Ekta has gone on to be a highly successful para-athlete competing in the Club Throw and Discus. Having also claimed six International medals, Ekta is now booked as a speaker to share the importance of diversity, inclusion and equality and how Para sports empower them.
Aged 18, Ekta unfortunately was involved in a road traffic accident that left her with a cervical spinal cord injury that caused paralysis in her upper and lower limbs. Not letting such adversity hold her back, Ekta later completed a Masters in English at Kurukshetra University and went on to become a Government Civil Servant. She has also become a talented Para-athlete, competing in the Club Throw and Discus events. Having claimed Gold at the 2018 Asian Para Games, Ekta has made headlines as the first female quadriplegic person to represent India at the elite international level.
Also the Asian Record holder for the Club Throw and Discus, Ekta has also claimed five Gold National Para Athletics Championship medals, one Gold IPC Grand Prix medal, one Silver IPC Grand Prix medal, one Bronze National Para Athletics Championships medal and one Bronze IPC Grand Prix medal. During her performance at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championship, Ekta earned qualification to represent India in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. She has also been awarded with a National Award for outstanding performance as a role model for people with disabilities and named the 2018 ESPN Para Athlete of the Year.
Using her voice to promote, ensure and protect rights to equality and dignity for disabled people, Ekta is now booked as a speaker for corporate events. A seasoned speaker, Ekta has performed at the 2021 Safe Sport International conference, promoting para-sport as a tool for acceptance of diversity and increasing inclusion and equality.
