Denise Parnell is a leading authority in international tennis, currently serving as the Championships Referee at Wimbledon. Making history as the first female referee at Wimbledon, she is also one of only 16 women in the world holding ITF Gold Badge International Tennis Referee status. With a career spanning playing, coaching and refereeing professional sports, Denise is an inspiring speaker who shares her expertise in leadership and peak performance.
As a professional tennis player for over a decade, Denise competed in WTA tour events and The Championships Wimbledon in 1986, alongside achieving 11 England International Caps, including 4 captaincies. Transferring her experience into coaching, she trained senior and junior players, taking players from beginner level to winning National Junior Championships. Denise retired from playing tennis in 1991 and became a mentor to Lawn Tennis Association National Referees. Making a difference in tennis, she served as an Executive Committee Member for the British Women’s Tennis Association and a consultant for London Boroughs sports programmes for over 25 years, influencing coaching and programmes at the grassroots level. Starting out as a Manager of the Players' Desk at Wimbledon, Denise became an Assistant Referee at The Championships and served as a Review Official at the US Open before becoming the first female Championships Referee at Wimbledon in 2023.
With a successful tennis career, Denise was the British National Under 21 Champion in 1980 and the number 1 player for Eintracht Dortmund in Division One of the German Tennis League for 10 years. Recognised for her officiating career, she has received the Referee of the Year by the Association of British Tennis Officials twice and the Ad Lucem alumnae award from her school. Outside of the court, Denise is an experienced sports consultant as Director of Denise Parnell Sports Consultancy, working with IBM to supply data for Wimbledon Championships and a Consultant for TennisViz.
