Cathy Mulligan is the Founder of the Sustainable Society Digital Collective – a community that is working to connect and empower grassroots work on digital technologies and sustainability. Cathy has been at the forefront of the digital transformation and emerging technologies landscape for over 25 years. Cathy has travelled across the globe for her work, including to the North Pole as technical support staff for the Beringia 2005 expedition. Cathy is now available to share her expertise in digital technology, digital economy, emerging technologies, and the ethical implications of digital technologies.
Cathy’s educational qualifications include BSc in Information Technology from UNSW, and an MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development & PhD from the University of Cambridge. Her illustrious career has included positions such as System Manager at Ericsson, Head of Digital Strategy & Economics at Future Cities Catapults, and Co-Director of College Centre for Cryptocurrency Research & Engineering at Imperial College London. As a Member of the UN Secretary General’s High Level Panel on Digital Cooperation, Cathy was instrumental in developing policies and strategies to strengthen international cooperation in the digital space.
Author books such as “EPC & 4G Packet Networks”, “Internet of Things” and “5G Core Networks”, Cathy has led several research projects related to digital economies, creating trust in digitally enabled industries and smart cities. Since 2024, Cathy has been a Fellow of the Richard Bosch Academy and has previously been a Fellow of the World Economic Forum. Also the Director of CM Digital Innovations, Cathy consults organisations on the application of emerging tech to sustainable development.
Having learned to code at the age of 10, Cathy’s passion for the technology sector has transcended all qualms one could have had being one of the few women in a blatantly male-dominated field. Her hope is to make the industry more inclusive, sustainable and resilient.
