GB Swimming Head Coach Bill Furnis is no stranger to challenge and hard work. With his biggest claim to fame being leading Great Britain to its most successful Olympics at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Bill knows what it takes to succeed. His commitment and drive towards leadership and sport is commendable, making him a firm favourite amongst the sporting world.
Bill began his career in swimming coaching in the late 1970’s, later in 1980 he progressed to a full time swimming coach teaching the people of Nottingham. Bill is well known for coaching the amazing Rebecca Adlington, the British 2 x Olympic Gold Medalist and World Record Holder. Bill is both a respected and well-liked coach, advocate and leader in his sport. Following Bill Furniss’s move to take on the role of British Swimming Head Coach, the club made a presentation to him at Beechdale Pool.
Bill’s predominant role is to provide leadership and management support to the British Swimming coaches . He likes to ensure that there is development of technical standards and consistency within the swimming teams.
Bill is thoroughly experienced in coaching, having a career that spans more than 30 years at international level. Before accepting the position with the British Swimming he was the coach of a swimming club, called the Nova Centurion swimming club. Bill joined Nova as a coach in 1980 and was with the Swim Squad and Nova until March 2013. Over the years, his personal development as a coach matched the increasing level of swimmers, ultimately seeing him become the best ASA Coach Tutor in the country.
As well as coaching at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Bill was also part of the coaching staff at the London 2012 Olympic Games. In addition to those two olympics he was the Head Coach for the Olympic Team in Atlanta in 1996 and has been part of the Olympic team staff ever since 1996. In reward for his dedication to swimming coaching, Bill was awarded an OBE in the 2017 Birthday Honours. Now Bill also lends his talent and expertise in leadership and management to motivational speaking, speaking at a range of events up and down the country.
