Ana Birchall is a significant figure in Romanian politics, best recognised for her roles as Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Justice and Minister of European Affairs. Alongside her political career, she also has a strong background as a lawyer in the US. After gaining a law degree from the University of Bucharest, Ana studied at Yale Law School, where she completed a master's and doctorate in law. Practising corporate law at one of the biggest law firms in the world, she worked at White and Case LLP in New York, advising multinational companies on complex legal and cross-border business matters. Returning to Romania, she was elected as a Member of Parliament and later joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, serving as the Minister of European Affairs. Growing her influence in the Romanian Government, Ana became Deputy Prime Minister in 2018, leading projects and advancements of Romania’s next generation nuclear energy development. A year later, she was selected as the Minister of Justice, enacting major institutional reforms and introducing Romania’s first legislation enabling the recovery of assets ordered by courts from individuals convicted of crimes committed while holding public office.
Alongside her prominent roles in government, Ana played a key role in the European process that led to the inclusion of nuclear energy in the EU Taxonomy. A longstanding advocate for equal opportunities and women’s rights, she also initiated and secured the adoption of Romania’s first comprehensive Equal Opportunities Law, legislating equal pay for equal work.
