His breakthrough came after signing a solo recording contract with CBS in 1982. His single 'Wherever I Lay My Hat' reached number one and launched the multi-million-selling album 'No Parlez'. The record sold more than seven million copies worldwide, became the biggest-selling UK-signed album in CBS history and was the first of three UK number-one albums.

As his international reputation grew, Paul became one of the defining artists of the 1980s. He opened the iconic Band Aid charity single 'Do They Know It's Christmas?', performed at Live Aid and later appeared at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert and The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert alongside the surviving members of Queen. His second album produced the global hit 'Every Time You Go Away', which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned him the Brit Award for Best Male, followed by Best British Video for the song. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with artists including Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, Nile Rodgers, David Gilmour and Zucchero, while also exploring new musical styles with Los Pacaminos, releasing further solo albums, publishing a cookbook and appearing on television programmes including Celebrity MasterChef and Hell's Kitchen. In 2019, he celebrated the 35th anniversary of 'No Parlez' with a major tour and joined Cher as her UK tour support.
