Paul Lawrie OBE is a legendary Scottish professional golfer who has 8 European Tour wins and a major win at the 1999 Open Championship. He is also well recognised for his role as vice-captain of the Europe Ryder Cup team in 2016. Reflecting on his remarkable sporting career, Paul shares stories from the highs and lows of his golf journey and memorable tournament experiences.
Turning professional at the age of 17 with a handicap of 5, Paul achieved his first significant victories in 1990 when he won the Scottish Assistants’ Championship and Scottish Under-25 Championship. After joining the European Tour, he achieved his first tournament win at the 1996 Catalan Open. His breakthrough came in 1999 when he won his maiden major title at The Open Championship and his second win on the European Tour at the Qatar Masters. Adding to his European Tour victories, Paul won at the Dunhill Links Championship, where he also received the award for European Tour Shot of the Year, and the Open de Andalucía. After winning the Qatar Masters for the second time, he won the 2012 Johnnie Walker Championship on the European Tour, qualifying for the Ryder Cup where he won as part of the Europe team. Paul returned to the Ryder Cup in 2016 when he was selected as vice-captain of the team. Retiring from the European Tour in 2020, he has since won the 2019 Scottish Seniors Open, Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship & European Senior Masters on the European Senior Tour.
In recognition of his achievements and service to golf, Paul was appointed MBE in 2000 and earned OBE in the 2013 Birthday Honours. He also has a legacy in golf as one of only eight players to have competed in more than 600 European Tour events and the last player from Scotland to win a major. Supporting the future talent of golfing, he created the Paul Lawrie Foundation for under-18s with an interest in golf and founded the Tartan Pro Tour, an official satellite tour to the Challenge Tour. He also bought the Aspire Golf Centre in Aberdeen, which has been renamed the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre.
A highly sought-after keynote and after-dinner speaker, Paul regularly hosts ‘An Evening with Paul Lawrie’ events where he speaks about mental strength and his mentoring work. If you are looking for an experienced golfer for a corporate golf day or event, hire Paul Lawrie today.
