An extraordinary journey lies at the heart of Tony Hawks’ dynamic after dinner speeches. Drawing in audience members with his tongue in cheek examination of his experiences travelling Round Ireland With a Fridge, he discusses the hilarious journey inspired a bestselling book and comedy tour. He has spoken at two TEDx events as well as inspired corporate audiences across the world.
Hawks’ first bizarre trip came about on the back of a bar bet made with a friend. His account of his time in Ireland was well-received selling over 800,000 copies. It would also prompt the creation of a film adaptation released in 2010 and starring Hawks alongside comedians Ed Byrne, Sean Highes and Josie Lawrence.
After the success of Round Ireland with a Fridge, Hawks would go on to take on another drunken bet. This time with comedian Arthur Smith, he promised to venture to Moldova attempting to beat every member of the Moldovan national football team at a game of tennis. Once again the book was adapted into a feature film in 2012. His efforts would also see the opening of a medical centre for socially vulnerable families in Moldova, something that earned Hawks an MBE in 2017 for services to disadvantaged children in Moldova.
Further bestsellers followed including One Hit Wonderland documenting his attempt to write a second hit song a decade after reaching number 4 in the UK Singles Charts with a parody of Beastie Boys’ Stutter Rap with trio Morris Minor and the Majors.
A prolific career in stand up comedy has also seen him featured on UK panel shows including I’m Sorry I Haven’t Got a Clue, Have I Got News for You and Just a Minute. He would also star in Grumpy Old Men and featured heavily on BBC Radio. He also hilariously appeared on Celebrity Mastermind, with a specialist subject of the pro skateboarder Tony Hawk in 2008. He continues to keep a list of social media interactions and emails received by skateboard fans intended for Tony Hawk to this day which can be found on his website, along with his hilarious and cheeky responses.
A wonderful after dinner speaker, event host and comedian able to impress all manner of audiences, Hawks has appeared at the Hay on Wye Festival, at a TEDx conference entitled Postcards from the Future as well as a TEDx talk in Munich entitled Lessons from the Fridge.
