CEO and chairman of one of the most recognisable brands in the world, Howard Schultz took a small coffee shop in New York and developed it into Starbucks, the global force we know and love today.
Graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in Communications in 1975, Howard joined the small coffee bean distributors Starbucks in 1982. Seeing the potential in the company, He tried to persuade the original owners to branch out into selling espresso drinks rather than just coffee bean drinks. His proposal was rejected and in 1985 Howard left Starbucks.
He was soon proved right and after raising some funds opened his first store in 1986 giving it the Italian name Il Giornale. He purchased the Starbucks name a few years later and branched out throughout the United States and worldwide. Howard’s vision and belief in his idea shows how you can still achieve success despite having setbacks in life. During his after-dinner speaking events, Howard can share his knowledge and insight on what it takes to run and work within such a huge organisation.
With stores in 56 countries, Starbucks receive around 50 million customers per week and sell more coffee than any other company in the world. The company has faced financial strife over the years but have always came out on top. Howard can discuss these times as an after-dinner speaker demonstrating how to deal with both positive and negative experiences in business.
Well respected in the industry not just for his business attributes, Howard’s stance on numerous moral issues has been applauded. Openly supporting same sex marriage and asking American customers not to take firearms into Starbucks stores have been praised.
In 1999, he was awarded the National Leadership Award for philanthropic and educational efforts to combat AIDS. Also, Howard was named the 2011 Businessperson of the Year for his achievements with Starbucks.
