An American video game designer, Will Wright is famous for creating SimCity and The Sims. Highly talented as a game designer, Will has worked with the likes of EA and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Game Developers Choice Awards in 2001. As a teenager, Will enjoyed playing video games, and whilst playing Raid on Bungeling Bay Will discovered his love for building islands using a level editor. Before long, Will had designed the concept for SimCity, and after he became the Co-Founder of Maxis in 1987, Will was able to publish SimCity in 1989. Since then, Will has worked tirelessly to produce the most engaging and entertaining video games, having created SimEarth, SimAnt, SimCity 2000 and SimCopter. In 1997, EA brought Will’s company Maxis, and he introduced his prospect of The Sims to EA. In 2000, EA published The Sims, and since then The Sims has become known as one of Will’s biggest successes to date. Since the creation of The Sims, Will has also released Spore, another of Will’s life simulation masterpieces.
In 2009, Will left Maxis to focus on his solo operations, creating the Stupid Fan Club startup and experimental entertainment studio. After four years, the Stupid Fan Club closed, and since then Will has focused his interests on working as a member of the Board of Directors of Linden Lab (creators of Second Life), developing the mobile game Proxi, launching the project VoxVerse and co-founding Gallium Games. Will’s most recent venture, VoxVerse, is a blockchain game in which creators can trade or sell their work for NFTs and cryptocurrency – highlighting Will’s passions for emerging technology, such as NFTs and the Metaverse. In recognition of his commitments as a game designer, Will has been inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame and awarded a Fellowship of the British Academy of Film and Television Awards.
Also the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from PC Magazine and the Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Progress and Service from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Will is now highly sought after as a speaker to share his expertise on gaming and the technology used to create the world’s most popular games. Considered a ‘technical virtuoso with boundless imagination’, Will’s revolutionary inventions prioritise ‘learning more than losing’ and ‘invention more than sport’. A seasoned speaker, Will was formerly invited to deliver the TED talk Spore, Birth of a Game, in which he discussed his then-newest game, Spore.
