Hailed as the greatest ever opening batsmen, Sunil Gavaskar is a former Indian international cricketer. His career spanned over a decade and saw him named as a world-class sportsman, to this day he is extremely well respected for his talent in the game. Introduced to the sport by his cricketer Uncle, Gavaskar began playing in Bombay as well as in school Quickly he was noticed as gifted player and was selected as part of the Indian team in 1971 and received his first cap in March of the same year against the West Indies. From his initial debut, Gavaskar was a force to be reckoned with and he scored 774 runs in the West Indies Tour Widely admired for his incredible technique in fast bowling, Gavaskar has a place in cricket history as a world record setting player.
His career was largely spent playing on the Indian national team, where he achieved the most test runs and test centuries scored by any batsman. The only Indian to have scored two centuries in a test match on three occasions, Gavaskar was also a skilled fielder who was also the first Indian to reach 100 catches, that wasn’t a wicketkeeper. Throughout his career, he captained the India team on several occasions. In recognition of his record breaking career, Gavaskar was the recipient of a number of honours. He received two Indian Civilian Honours: Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan, the third and fourth highest civilian awards in Indian. In 2009 he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, along with other cricket legends.
His highest award came in 2012 when he was awarded the Col CK Nayundu Lifetime Achievement Award for Cricket in India. Since retiring from professional cricket in 1987, Gavaskar has become a controversial, no-nonsense commentator. On both the small screen and as a columnist in leading Indian newspapers, he has shared his opinions on the new stars of cricket. He has remained actively involved in the sport that bought him so joy and success and was appointed the interim President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 2014.
