
Award-winning wildlife expert, television presenter and after-dinner speaker, Steve Backshall is best known for co-presenting Blue Planet Live, facing Deadly 60 and making appearances on shows such as Springwatch. Surrounded by animals from birth, Steve has always been at one with nature. As a keen adventurer, he took a gap year to travel solo around Asia, India and Africa before going onto to study English and Theatre Studies at the University of Exeter. He completed another degree in biology at the Open University before moving to Japan to become a black belt in judo and a brown belt in karate. On his return to the UK, Steve began his career with Rough Guides where he wrote guidebooks surrounding Indonesia and South East Asia.
Backshall first came to TV prominence after he filmed himself exploring through the jungles of Columbia. He sold the footage to the National Geographic Channel who eventually took him on as their Adventurer in Residence for five years. Whilst with the BBC, Steve became the subject of The Really Wild Show. He also co-presented Springwatch Trackers, became the face of Deadly 60 and narrated Nature’s Microworlds.
Most recently, Steve has co-presented Big Blue Live along with Matt Barker and Liz Bonnin. He has also become the subject of Steve Backshall’s Extreme Mountain Challenge where he climbed one of Venezuela’s more dangerous tepuis mountains, Down the Mighty River with Steve Backshall, Japan’s Northern Wilderness and Wild Alaska Live. In 2019, Steve co-presented the highly acclaimed Blue Planet Live on BBC One along with Chris Packham and Liz Bonnin. On top of a successful career within the media, Steve has also released a variety of both fiction and non-fiction books centred around wildlife.
