Stephen went on to win another two Gold medals at the subsequent Sydney and Athens Paralympic Games. One of the leading athletes in the Club Throw, Stephen succeeded in holding onto the world record for 11 years, proving himself to be worthy of leading the men’s athletics team in the 2012 London Paralympic Games.

On 18/05/2022 Newcastle Hospitals were delighted to welcome Stephen to deliver an online session on ‘Why Inclusion Matters’ as part of Equality, Diversity & Human Right Week in the NHS. As EDI Manager one of my challenges is trying to engage as wider audience as possible, rather than only those people who already acknowledge the importance of diversity & inclusion. What can I say – Stephen is now my secret weapon! His status as Paralympian certainly drew people in who don’t normally engage with the EDI agenda and his honest, but humorous manner when talking about his life and philosophy struck a chord with so many of the audience members. Through all this he managed to explain why EDI is key to a truly inclusive society and demonstrated how easy it is to live by principles that give everyone the opportunity to fail, pick themselves up and try again. Thank you for your time Stephen and I hope to work with you again in the future. - Tor - EDI Manager (People), Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
