Peter Norvig is an Education Fellow at Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence and Engineering Director at Google. A preeminent expert in AI, natural language processing and machine learning, he co-wrote the standard text on AI, Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach, with Stuart Russell. The leading textbook on AI for over three decades, it is used by over 1500 universities in 135 countries as the basis for learning. A distinguished thought leader on AI, Peter is highly sought after for speaking engagements, where he delivers impactful presentations on the latest insights in AI.
After earning a BSc in Applied Mathematics at Brown University, Peter completed his PhD in Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1985. He became a Research Scientist at Stanford University before joining Sun Microsystems as a Senior Research Scientist in 1994. This was followed by the role of Chief Designer at Harlequin Software and Chief Scientist at Junglee. In 1998, he became Division Chief of Computational Sciences at NASA and Head of the Computational Science Division at NASA Ames, where he developed the Remote Agent experiment that flew on the Deep Space 1 spacecraft. This was one of the top achievements in the history of AI and won the 1999 NASA Software of the Year award.
In 2010, he became a Visiting Lecturer at Stanford University. Peter also taught at the University of California Berkeley and the University of Southern California. The current Engineering Director at Google, Peter made substantial contributions to the globally renowned company, growing machine translation, speech recognition and computer vision over the last two decades. He also improved the quality of the core web search algorithms. The distinguished computer scientist is the author of notable books, including Paradigms of AI Programming, dubbed the best book on programming ever written. Widely cited, Peter has published over 50 articles on computer science-related topics.
His online course on Artificial Intelligence became one of the most popular courses, with over 160,000 people enrolling from countries all over the world. In recognition of outstanding contributions to AI, he was made a Fellow of the AAAI, ACM, California Academy of Sciences and American Academy of Arts and Science. He is also a Councillor of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence.
