Nina Goswami was the BBC’s first Creative Diversity Lead, who has won awards for advancing the pioneering 50:50 scheme across the BBC. Nina was first inspired to become a journalist at an early age when she watched Moira Stuart, the first Black presenter in British history read the news. Encouraged by what she saw, Nina made it her mission in life to emulate Moira and began her journey toward becoming a journalist and TV news editor. Most recently, in 2022, Nina was appointed as the Head of Inclusion UK for Clifford Chance, pioneering the inclusion policies of the world-leading international law firm.
However, noticing the lack of representation in the industry, Nina has become a proponent of diversity and inclusion, believing better representation in the workplace allows more relevant and better content to be made. As a result, she is currently paving the way through the 50:50 scheme by encouraging teams to be more balanced in terms of the ratio of men to women and opening up the scheme so that it is more inclusive toward ethnic minorities and people with disabilities.
Nina began working towards her dream of having a career in journalism at a young age. Working for the school magazine and then hosting a radio programme at a hospital, Nina built a strong network in every experience. Although she ended up studying Law at the Queen Mary University of London, this only helped her in her journey to become a journalist, providing her with a strong foundation in data analysis and with the ability to make a strong case. After graduating, she began working with the Sunday Times specialising in legal issues. Then moving on to work for the Sunday Telegraph, Nina started to realise that print media was becoming obsolete. Whilst searching for other opportunities, aided by her mother, she found an internship opportunity with the BBC.
As a long-time employee with the BBC, Nina has had the opportunity to work across multiple departments gaining substantial experience and holding several senior positions along the way. Eventually overseeing the 50:50 project and becoming the first Creative Diversity Lead for the BBC, Nina is leading the way in diversity and inclusion in broadcasting and is hoping the success of the scheme will set a standard for other leading corporations to work towards. In 2021 she won the Top 20 Global Diversity List Champion and Highly Commended Asian Women of Achievement Awards, in recognition of her work on 50:50. Nina Goswami is an exceptional speaker to book in the area of diversity and inclusion as she is actively implementing measures to improve representation in the workplace. As a result, she has an abundance of practical insight to share.
