A passionate social activist, Nimco Ali has forged a renowned reputation for her work in eliminating female genital mutilation. Whilst on holiday in Djibouti, Nimco underwent female genital mutilation, having since suffered health complications and undergone reconstructive surgery. With such an experience shaping the life she knows today, Nimco is making it her mission to help abolish the practice of FGM. Widely known as the Co-Founder of the Daughters of Eve, don’t hesitate in hiring Nimco Ali to speak at your event when looking for a passionate social activist.
Having personally experienced FGM, Nimco Ali is highly passionate about eradicating the practice used across many African, Asian and Middle Eastern countries. In 2010, along with psychotherapist Leyla Hussein, Nimco co-founded Daughters of Eve. A non-profit organisation, Daughters of Eve is committed to providing increased education and awareness surrounding FGM. Later in 2019, Nimco became the Co-Founder of The Five Foundation, a global partnership raising awareness of FGM worldwide and leveraging funding for organisations committed to eliminating the practice of FGM.
Alongside founding her two companies, Nimco has also worked as the Network Coordinator for The Girl Generation. She also Co-Founded the Ginsburg Women’s Health Board, passionately advocating for increased equity in the NHS for women. In 2020, Nimco was appointed as the Independent Government Adviser for Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls by Priti Patel, a testament to her authority on the subject and her passion to eliminate it. Nimco has also authored the book What We’re Told Not to Talk About (But We’re Going to Anyway), in which she discusses important and often taboo subjects that women are ‘told not to talk about’. Outside of her passionate women’s advocacy, Nimco has also contested a seat as an MP, standing for Hornsey and Wood Green in North London for the Women’s Equality Party.
In recognition of her commitment, Nimco has been awarded the Community/Charity Award at the 2014 Red Magazine Woman of the Year Awards. Also named at no.6 on the Woman’s Hour Power List 2014 and on the BBC’s 100 Woman List 2018, it comes without surprise that Nimco was appointed OBE for Services to Tackling FGM and Gender Inequality. Offering holistic support to survivors of the practice, Nimco was also honoured as the 2019 Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy International Women’s Rights Award winner. Now hired as a public speaker, Nimco passionately advocates for women’s rights and shares her life experiences to support others who have also fallen victim to FGM. A fantastic choice as a speaker for International Women’s Day or Women’s Health Month, don’t hesitate in hiring Nimco Ali when looking for an inspirational female speaker.
