Millie Gooch is the founder of Sober Girl Society, the world’s largest community for sober and sober curious women, and she is a recognised authority in the UK’s sobriety movement. A former ‘party girl’ during her days at University of Sussex, Millie found she was no longer drinking for enjoyment, but rather to mask hangovers and feelings of anxiety. This alcohol problem stayed with her for years afterwards, but since getting sober, Millie has been in a much happier place and is on a mission to share her story and remind others that they are not alone.
Once graduated from university in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in English Language & Literature, Millie began working in the media industry, but the effects of partying and hangovers had followed her, and it was taking its toll on her mental health. Millie gave up alcohol in 2018, and seven months later launched Sober Girl Society, using her lived experiences to help others. She is a journalist, sharing her wisdom by writing for publications such as ELLE, Stylist, British Vogue, and the BBC, and in 2021, published The Sober Girl Society Handbook, sharing tips and advice on staying sober in a world that glorifies drinking. This led to her appointment as an ambassador for Alcohol Change UK. In addition, in 2022, she was presented with the prestigious Media Award from the Research Society on Alcoholism.
In 2023, Millie co-founded Dry Disco, an alcohol-free disco, alongside content creator Stephanie Elswood, which aims to smash the view that sober is boring. A year later, she published her mindfulness journal, Booze Less, providing readers with mindful tips and tricks including creating boozeless boundaries, discovering fulfilling alcohol-free hobbies, and navigating social events without alcohol. By 2024, Millie had completed her Master’s in Addiction & Mental Health from London Metropolitan University, and she was also nominated for Changemaker of the Year at the B Creator Awards.
Millie delivered her TEDx talk in 2024 on why alcohol belongs in the mental health conversation, sparking important conversations and increasing her influence. She continues to spread her message through the delivery of employee workshops for the likes of ASOS, Charlotte Tilbury, and the Ministry of Justice. She invites you to hire her for your next event to gain valuable insights on how you can make your own workplace and events more sober-inclusive.
