Michael Fuller, a pivotal figure in the fight against institutionalised racism, is the former Chief Constable that made history for the British police force on his appointment. From instigating task forces to pioneering change, Michael’s career was dedicated to building bridges between the public and the police and ensuring racism was stamped out in the force. Becoming Britain’s first black Chief Constable in 2004 was a historic moment for policing and placed Michael in a prestigious position to tackle discrimination against ethnic minority groups from the perspective of someone who had suffered from it. As the head of Kent Police Service, Michael made a national impact as the spearhead of the Racial and Violent Crime Task Force and Operation Trident, through which he reduced gun crime in London and institutional racism in the wake of the murder of Stephen Lawrence. Having dedicated his career to combatting serious crime, Michael is hailed as one of the 100 Great Black Britons for his efforts.
Upon retiring after 34 years in the police force, Michael was sought after to implement essential change on a wide scale. Named as Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of the Crown Prosecution Service in 2010, Michael was responsible for investigating the Crown Prosecution Service and advising senior bodies on relevant changes that were required. A champion of diversity, Michael was awarded the Queens Police Medal for distinguished service, having changed the internalised attitudes of prosecution bodies nationwide.
Publishing his memoir ‘Kill The Black One First’ in 2019, Michael offered readers an insight into his unparalleled career, the adversity he faced being a minority in the forces, and the ways in which he approaches series crime.
