Dr. Mark Roseland is a globally recognised leader in sustainable development, urban planning, and community resilience. He is Professor of Sustainable Community Solutions at Arizona State University (ASU) and Senior Global Futures Scientist with the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory. Formerly Director of the School of Community Resources and Development at ASU, he is also Professor Emeritus at Simon Fraser University (SFU), where he directed the Centre for Sustainable Development.
Mark’s academic foundation includes a PhD in Community and Regional Planning from the University of British Columbia. Early in his career, he worked as Chief City Planner in Metro Vancouver, where he honed his expertise in sustainable urban governance. His journey has been marked by leadership roles in academia and public service, establishing him as a preeminent authority in sustainability.
Mark has received numerous accolades throughout his career. He has been named one of ‘Vancouver's Top 50 Living Public Intellectuals’ and awarded the SFU President's Award for Leadership in Sustainability and the SFU Sustainability Network Award. His groundbreaking book, ‘Toward Sustainable Communities’, now in its fifth edition, is considered an essential resource worldwide. In 2023, Mark launched Pando | Sustainable Communities, a global network promoting collaboration among sustainability practitioners.
