Julien Simon-Chautemps

Julien Simon-Chautemps is a distinguished race and performance engineer with over two decades of experience in the world of motorsport. Renowned for his technical acumen and leadership in high-pressure environments, Julien has made significant contributions to Formula 1, working with top teams and legendary drivers. His most prominent achievement is serving as Kimi Räikkönen’s race engineer during his final F1 seasons, where his expertise played a pivotal role in optimising car performance and strategy.

Julien's early career is rooted in a solid educational foundation. He graduated in 2002 from the prestigious Institut Polytechnique des Sciences Avancées (IPSA) in Paris with a degree in Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering. This academic achievement provided the launchpad for his entry into the motorsport industry, where he quickly began to make his mark. His journey started with Prema Powerteam, where he served as a race engineer in the F3 Euroseries and Formula Renault 2.0. After his time with Prema Powerteam, he transitioned into Formula 1, working with top teams such as Toyota, Caterham, Lotus, Renault, and Alfa Romeo Sauber. Over the course of his F1 career, Julien attended more than 265 Grand Prix events and completed an impressive 14 seasons at the pinnacle of motorsport. 

Among his many achievements, his role as Kimi Räikkönen’s race engineer during the Finnish driver’s final F1 seasons stands out. He was instrumental in optimising car performance and strategy, helping Räikkönen achieve significant results despite the challenges of an ageing F1 car and tight competition. Julien’s work at Lotus also saw him support Romain Grosjean’s rise in F1, reinforcing his reputation as a race engineer who could bring out the best in his drivers. In 2022, Julien founded JSC7 Engineering Ltd, a consultancy that offers specialised motorsport and automotive advice. His consultancy not only works with motorsport teams but also provides expert technical insights to media outlets such as Canal+ and F1TV, where Julien enhances viewers’ understanding of the sport with his real-time analysis and commentary.
