Joshua Levine – best known for the crucial part he’s played in telling the unheard stories of wartime Britain and Ireland – is a historian, author, actor, and barrister who has had a profound impact on people’s perception of world-changing events. Having served as a Historical Advisor during the production of Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk”, Joshua would go on to write the Sunday Times & New York Times #1 Bestselling book of the same name – a feat still regarded by historians as one of the most pivotal in recent years. Partnered with his extensive list of powerful publications and Radio 4 documentary presentations, Joshua has earned himself a spot among some of the nation’s greatest historic authors.
Joshua first kickstarted his writing career in 2006. Inspired to lend an ear to those who had yet to be heard, he approached Ebury Press with “Forgotten Voices of the Blitz”. As it happens, they were more than happy to publish such an ambitious recount of the historical event. From there, Joshua would go on to capture his long-standing interest in First World War aircrafts and pilots in “On a Wing and a Prayer” – which would go on to receive a Channel 4 documentary adaptation “Fighting the Red Baron” – before taking a year-long retreat to Ireland. During this time, he was able to connect with ex-members of the IRA, INLA, UVF, and UDA, and compiled what he had learned in shortlisted Writer’s Guild Non-Fiction Book of the Year “Beauty and Atrocity”.
Though he had already covered many aspects and perspectives of Britain and Ireland’s time during The Great War and The Second World War, Joshua’s work was far from done. Following his year in North Ireland, he published “Open Fortitude”, which focused on the British spy operation that secured the success of D-Day, and quickly followed it up with “The Secret History of the Blitz” – which was subsequently nominated for the 2016 PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize. In addition, Joshua wrote and presented two Radio 4 documentaries, namely “The Real Rachman: Lord of the Slums” and “The Little Stamp That Became the Most Valuable Thing in the World”. Able to weave non-fiction narratives with accuracy and poise, Joshua has become a revered author and historian whose works will continue to inform and amaze readers for years to come.
