
George Magnus is a well-respected expert within the financial sphere, his extensive career underscored by vast experience within the financial services. Today, he is a Research Associate at both Oxford University and London’s School of Oriental & African Studies. He has authored three books, The Age of Ageing (2008), Uprising: Will Emerging Markets Shape or Shake the World Economy? (2011), and Red Flags: Why Xi’s China is in Jeopardy (2018). Having graduated with MSc Economics from the School of Oriental & African Studies in 1971, George went on to become an Economics Writer at the Central Office of Information until 1974, following this with European Economist at Lloyds Bank International until 1977, and then Head of Economics (EMEA region) at Bank of America until 1985. From there, he was Chief Economist at SG Warburg for 12 years, following which, he began working at UBS Investment Bank as a Chief Economist in 1997, from which she moved into a Senior Economist Adviser role in 2005 until 2012, while also being Chair of the Investment Committee of the UK Pension and Life Assurance Fund for a few years.
In 2007, George notably predicted the Great Financial Crisis of 2008 in his research papers, where he analysed the crisis and its impact. He continues to be approached for his insights and interpretations regarding the global economy, as well as that of China, his studies of which stem back to his first visit to the country in 1994. He remains dedicated to examining Xi Jinping’s China, focusing on the causes behind and consequences of the country’s economic deceleration, and it is from this that his highly acclaimed book, Red Flags: Why Xi’s China is in Jeopardy derived. Furthermore, George’s input is regularly sought out by news outlets such as BBC TV and radio, Financial Times, and Prospect magazine.
