Eileen Burbidge MBE is Chair of Tech City UK, a government-backed organisation supporting digital business across the UK, and Founder of Passion Capital, an early-stage venture capital firm that has invested in the likes of Monzo, Go Cardless and Lulu, a private social network for single women. In 2015, as a testament to her expanse of technology knowledge, she was appointed the British Treasury’s “special envoy” for fintech. After completing a BSc Engineering degree in Computer Science from the University of Illinois Eileen quickly influenced the industry with her innovative ideas, proving herself worthy of an MBE for services to UK Business.
During former Prime Minister David Cameron's reign, Eileen served on the Business Advisory Group. Additionally, she was a Tech Ambassador for the former Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, Patron for the National Association for Advisors in Computing Education, advisor to edtechUK and Cyber London Lab and was also Europe’s first cybersecurity startup accelerator.
As a partner at Passion Capital, Eileen serves as a non-executive director on a number of fast-growing SMEs including Monzo Bank, Digital Shadows, Tide, Butternut Box, Prowler.io and Focal Point Positioning, among others. Having previously worked in marketing roles, she utilises her extensive operational experience from investment activities whilst in business and product roles at like Yahoo!, Skype and Apple. In 2004, she moved from the United States to London to pursue a career at Skype, which then led to her launching Passion Capital with Stefan Glaenzer in 2008.
Eileen’s recent awards are a fitting testament to her hard work, innovative thinking and determination within the field of technology. As a woman and a minority in a male-dominated field, she has proven that anyone is capable of success. Eileen has been included in the WIRED100 each year since 2012, she was one of London's 1000 Most Influential people in 2014 according to the Evening Standard newspaper and in the same year was named one of the 12 Most Influential People in Tech by the Telegraph. In 2018, she was listed in the Financial Times’ list of the ‘Top 100 minority ethnic leaders in technology’.
