Dom Troulan is a highly decorated military leader, as the only person in the world to receive both Gallantry Awards. During the three decades of military service, including two decades in the UK special forces, he reached the rank of Major in the Army. Dom now shares his unique perspectives from real-life experience operating under extreme pressure and high-risk situations.
At just 16 years old, Dom joined the Royal Marine Commandos in 1979 as a result of a £10 bet, serving in the Falklands War, Central America and the Balkans. Joining the British Army in 1998, he rose through the ranks and took early retirement in 2009, leaving with the rank of Major. Since his retirement from the armed forces, Dom continued operating in intense and life-threatening situations, including leading a hostage release and extraction of those kidnapped by Somali pirates and a successful rescue and liberation of the ‘Mogadishu Six’ with two expensive aircraft, 13-year-old twin girls and a lion cub. He worked extensively in Sub-Saharan Africa as a Security Risk Manager and advised international governments and private organisations on crisis management and resilience. He is well-known for risking his life multiple times to save dozens of lives from heavily armed extremists during the 2013 Westgate Shopping Mall terrorist attack. In 2019, Dom played a pivotal role in the rescue of individuals from the Dusit Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya in 2019.
Recognising his extraordinary courage in the face of death, Dom received the UK’s highest civilian award for bravery, The George Cross, becoming the first civilian recipient of the award in over 40 years. He was also awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal for his service in the military, making him the only individual in history with both Gallantry Awards. He is also the recipient of the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service in 2002.
A respected and inspirational figure in military and crisis management, Dom delivers powerful keynote speeches, equipping audiences with the mindset, courage and clarity to lead through extreme pressure and uncertainty. Official Feedback From In-Person & Virtual Events
“We would highly recommend Dom Toulan as a guest speaker or conference facilitator, particularly for leadership or motivational activations. His personal backstory is not only fascinating but also unique …. It is rare to find someone so courageous and experienced who can draw on a wide range of actual case studies, incidents and adventures to not only inspire and entertain but to also develop and teach an audience. Once positioned, with good quality and production, his talks, backed up by incredible imagery, are fascinating. We would not hesitate in recommending Dom as a Keynote or Panel member – a more exciting personality would be hard to find.” - Leo JD Callow, Chairman, Callow Events
“Dom is a truly remarkable individual. His military career spans every significant conflict in which the UK has been involved since the early 1980s, and throughout he performed at the very top of his generation — setting standards that inspired those around him and that very few could match. On leaving the military, his selflessness never wavered. He has performed extraordinary acts of heroism in service of others — not as a single moment of courage, but as a consistent and defining pattern of character. He is also a gifted communicator. His stories are extraordinary in their own right, but what sets Dom apart is his natural ability to bring them to life for any audience. When he spoke to a group of senior City of London executives on our behalf last year, he held the room completely — and the impact stayed with people long after he had finished.” - Richard Stephens, Operations and Plans, OTHRYS
“Dom is highly personable and immediately engaged with the audience members. During his presentation, he spoke with the calm authority of someone who has stood in chaos and chosen courage. When he recounted his various exploits during and after his military service, the room fell silent. Not solely because of the spectacle, but because of precision. His words vividly placed every member of the audience at the centre of the narrative: the heat, the noise, the narrowing of options. He set the scene with a soldier’s economy and a storyteller’s restraint, allowing events to speak for themselves. As a speaker, Dom Troulan is compelling and deeply motivating. He inspires without embellishment, instructs without lecturing, and leaves audiences with practical insights about decision-making, responsibility and composure when it matters most. His is a rare voice in a world increasingly plagued by empty gestures. He is authentic, disciplined, and memorable and will guarantee to have his audiences grateful that individuals with his skills, courage and presence of mind exist within the UK’s military forces.” - Philip Price, TPICAP
