Chan Heng Chee

Chan Heng Chee is a diplomat and expert in international relations with decades of experience shaping policy and diplomacy in Southeast Asia and beyond. Known for her authoritative insights into political science and global governance, she is celebrated for her role as Singapore’s first female Ambassador to the United States. During her tenure from 1996 to 2012, she played a pivotal role in advancing bilateral relations, achieving milestones such as the US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement in 2003, the first agreement of its kind between the United States and a Southeast Asian country.

Chan’s journey began with a stellar academic career, marked by a first-class honours degree in political science from the University of Singapore. She served as Singapore’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where she was concurrently accredited as High Commissioner to Canada and Ambassador to Mexico. Her distinguished service earned her numerous accolades, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Order, and honorary doctorates from the University of Newcastle and the University of Buckingham.
