Angharad George-Carey

Angharad George-Carey is an actor, writer and podcaster. Angharad’s podcast, Daddy Issues, explores and confronts fatherlessness – but more specifically, fatherlessness in successful people. The podcast has featured guests such as Dylan Jones, Sharmadean Reid, Lord Malloch-Brown, Simran Randhawa, Sir Tim Waterstone and Julia Samuel, and has so far been featured in Vogue, GQ, and The Financial Times as ‘recommended Bank Holiday listening’. In the early hours of 26 December 1998, while on holiday in Sri Lanka, Angharad and her family were involved in a car accident.

They were all severely injured, and her father was killed. She was seven years old. Nearly 20 years on from her father’s death, Angharad became overwhelmed by a wave of grief. She found a psychotherapist, and with her help, began to realise the impact that losing her father at such a young age had had on her.

She became fascinated by other people’s experiences of growing up without a dad, and was amazed by how monumental and wide-ranging this issue seemed to be, yet how little it was discussed or integrated into mainstream consciousness. After countless caffeine-fuelled nights of reading about “daddy issues”, she began to notice a connection which further fascinated her: there was a clear link between success and fatherlessness.

She decided to make Daddy Issues. Angharad wants her guests’ stories to not only resonate with listeners, creating a vocabulary with which to speak about the struggles and realities of fatherlessness, but also, to inspire them. Fatherlessness, as she has found, need not provide a ceiling to your success. Rather, it can be the motivation and provide the focus to propel you forward towards bigger and better things.
