Steve Durcan is a former RAF test pilot and a sports advisor, currently serving as an Operational Performance Consultant for the McLaren F1 team and Arsenal Football Club. Bringing together his expertise in high performance, he is also the Founder and Director of X-1. With successful careers in the military and sports, Steve shares practical insights into leadership and performing under pressure.
Serving the Royal Air Force, Steve was a fighter pilot and instructor for the Tornado F-3 and GR-4 jets. He undertook a year of experimental test pilot training before becoming Lead Project Pilot for the RAF, managing and conducting flight tests. Due to his leadership within the RAF, Steve was selected for a foreign exchange position in the United States Air Force and served as project lead for the first international test deployment outside the US. Upon returning to the UK, he was an Experimental Test Pilot Instructor for the global defence company, QinetiQ, and a Test Pilot and Advisor for the UK Ministry of Defence. Since his retirement as a pilot, he has founded X-1, a training and consulting business. Steve has also become an Operational Performance Consultant for McLaren Racing F1 team and Arsenal Football Club, leading the reform of communication flows within the teams and embedding a culture of proactive decision-making.
During Steve’s three and a half years as a sports consultant, McLaren has won two back-to-back Constructors' Championships and a driver's title. A well-respected pilot, he received a Certificate of Commendation for Outstanding Achievement by the British Embassy Defence Attache and Minister for Defence & Materiel. He was also a recipient of the Sir Alan Cobham Award and the Hawker Hunter Trophy during his training at the experimental test pilot school.
