Johannes Radebe

Johannes Radebe is a South African-born British dancer, choreographer and television presenter, best known for his role as a professional dancer on BBC One’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. Recognised for his infectious charisma, exceptional talent and inspiring personal story, Johannes has become one of the entertainment industry’s most celebrated personalities. As host, he captivates audiences with his charisma, charm and humour, sharing the experiences that shaped his remarkable journey from humble beginnings in South Africa to international television success. His biggest breakthrough came in 2021 when he formed part of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’s’ first-ever all-male partnership with John Whaite, reaching the final and making television history in the process.

Born in Zamdela, South Africa, Johannes faced adversity from a young age. Growing up in a working-class community, he discovered dance through a local dance school attended alongside his sister. Despite his passion and natural ability, Johannes experienced homophobic bullying and discrimination throughout his childhood, while also facing barriers linked to race and class within competitive ballroom dancing. Determined to pursue his ambitions, he left home at just 13 years old to train more seriously in Gauteng province. During his teenage years in Johannesburg, Johannes endured periods of homelessness, often sleeping in dance studios or the back of taxis while continuing to work towards his goals. Before becoming a household name, he worked as a dance teacher in Johannesburg and later spent seven years performing on cruise ships, developing the discipline, confidence and stage presence that would define his future career.

Johannes’ professional achievements are extensive and continue to grow. A two-time Professional South African Latin Champion and three-time Amateur South African Latin Champion, he first gained recognition as a professional dancer on South Africa’s version of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ before joining the BBC’s flagship series in 2018. Over the years, Johannes has partnered with numerous celebrities, becoming particularly celebrated for his partnership with chef John Whaite, with whom he became part of the UK show’s first male same-sex pairing. Their journey to the final earned widespread praise and was revered by judges Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas, Anton Du Beke and Motsi Mabuse In his fourth series on the show, Johannes was partnered with comedian Ellie Taylor. Beyond ‘Strictly’, Johannes has showcased his versatility through choreography work on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK vs. the World’, winning the Celebrity Christmas Special of ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’, and publishing his bestselling memoir, ‘Jojo: Finally Home’. In 2025, he made his musical theatre debut starring as Lola in ‘Kinky Boots’, before later reprising the role in London. In 2026, the BBC announced Johannes as one of the new hosts of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, marking another major milestone in his career.
