James Sutton is a British actor, writer, podcast host and keynote speaker, best known for playing John Paul McQueen in Channel 4’s ‘Hollyoaks’. With more than twenty years of experience performing for audiences of millions, James has become a compelling speaker on self-trust, resilience, discipline and performance under pressure. His most significant achievement is helping to bring one of British television’s most influential LGBTQ+ storylines to mainstream audiences, earning recognition as a gay icon and demonstrating the power of honest, socially relevant storytelling.
James developed his passion for acting at an early age and went on to study at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, where he built the technical skills, confidence and emotional awareness required for a professional performance career. After appearing in productions including ‘Dream Team 80s’ and ‘Trial & Retribution X’, he secured his breakthrough role in 2006 as John Paul McQueen in ‘Hollyoaks’. The character’s coming out story became a defining moment in the programme’s history, exploring identity, sexuality, acceptance and social pressure with unusual honesty. James’ experience portraying emotionally demanding and sometimes controversial storylines shaped his understanding of communication, vulnerability and responsibility. It also taught him how to remain focused, reliable and composed while working under intense scrutiny, tight production schedules and the expectations that come with national recognition.
Following his original departure from ‘Hollyoaks’ in 2008, James joined ITV’s ‘Emmerdale’ in 2009 as Ryan Lamb, remaining in the role until 2011. He later returned to ‘Hollyoaks’ between 2012 and 2017, and again from 2019 until his final departure in 2026. Across these periods, James tackled storylines involving trauma, addiction, relationships, identity and personal change, building a reputation for grounded and emotionally intelligent performances. In 2024, he received a Best Actor nomination at the Inside Soap Awards, recognising the continued impact of his work. Beyond acting, James is the Founder of Protocol, an organisation launched in 2025 to help people rebuild confidence, direction and identity through structure, consistency and small commitments. He is also the Host of the ‘Male Mind Matters’ podcast, where he encourages candid conversations about masculinity, emotional wellbeing and the pressures facing everyday men.
James is hired by organisations seeking an experienced, relatable and unsentimental speaker who can turn personal insight into practical action. Central to his message is the belief that many capable people do not lack motivation; they lack evidence that they can trust their own promises. James explains how self-trust can be rebuilt through disciplined action, realistic commitments and consistency during uncertain periods. Drawing on two decades in public life, career transitions and his work through Protocol, he connects naturally with leaders, professionals, founders, corporate wellbeing audiences and men’s groups. His stagecraft, humour and openness allow him to address difficult subjects without losing warmth or accessibility. James leaves audiences with practical tools, a clearer understanding of their behaviour and a renewed sense of personal agency, making him a powerful choice for conferences, leadership events and workplace wellbeing programmes.
