Robert Lustig is a world-renowned American pediatric endocrinologist, known for his international authority on obesity, diabetes, nutrition and neuroscience. As the Professor emeritus of paediatrics in the division of endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), he specialises in neuroendocrinology and childhood obesity. Robert prides himself on being a leader in the global 'anti-sugar' and 'real food' movements to improve global health and reduce avoidable health implications. Gaining public attention in 2009, his lecture 'Sugar: The Bitter Truth' has garnered over 25 million YouTube views, showcasing the vast impact of his keynote speeches and his ability to translate complex messages to audiences across the globe.
After earning a Bachelor's Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1976, followed by an M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in 1980, Robert completed a pediatric residency at St. Louis Children's Hospital and a clinical fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at UCSF. Joining Rockefeller University, Robert served as a post-doctoral fellow and research associate in neuroendocrinology for six years, developing his knowledge and passion. Before returning to UCSF in 2001, he gained experience as a faculty member at the University of Tennessee, Memphis and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Additionally, he joined St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis to further explore the implications of childhood obesity. Continuing his professional studies, Robert completed a Master of Studies in Law from UC Hastings College of the Law in 2013.
Alongside his faculty work, he is the co-founder of the not-for-profit Institute for Responsible Nutrition and the Director of UCSF's WATCH programme, Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health. Robert formerly served as the Chair of the obesity task force of the Pediatric Endocrine Society, along with sitting on the steering committee of the International Endocrine Alliance to Combat Obesity, showcasing his commitment to bettering the health of society. With a passion for spreading awareness, he authored 'Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity and Disease' in 2013, followed by publishing 'The Hacking of the American Mind: The Science Behind the Corporate Takeover of Our Bodies and Brains'. Due to the mass success of his book, he went on to create 'The Fat Chance Cookbook' with over 100 recipes to help readers reduce sugar intake and lose weight.
