Dexter Fletcher is a renowned British film director, producer, actor, and writer, best known for directing box office smash-hit biopics such as Eddie the Eagle and Rocketman. With decades of experience in the film and TV industry, Dexter uses his unique perspectives and talent for storytelling to inspire and motivate the next generation of creatives.
Following his first film role as Baby Face in Bugsy Malone, Dexter acted in various productions during the 1980s, such as The Elephant Man, Lionheart, The Ragged Rawney, and Press Gang, in which he played Spike Thomson until 1993. Throughout the 90s and into the 2000s, Dexter continued to star in various significant productions such as Murder Most Horrid, alongside Dawn French, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Band of Brothers, Layer Cake, and Hotel Babylon. In 2011/12, Dexter made his directorial debut with Wild Bill, a film praised for its gritty realism, heartfelt undertones, and great balance of humour. His next film, Sunshine on Leith, was a musical film based on the Proclaimers' song and released in 2013 to great acclaim. He then directed the 2015 feel-good story of Eddie the Eagle, starring top-class talent like Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman, before taking over as director of the Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody. In 2019, he continued his success by directing Rocketman, a glittering and honest depiction of Elton John’s tumultuous rise to fame. Dexter agreed to direct the drama The Offer for Paramount Pictures, a series depicting the making of The Godfather, before going on to direct his latest release, Ghosted, a feature film for Apple TV+. Dexter has recently been announced as the director for the remake of the 1960s heist film, The League of Gentlemen.
As a result of his film success, Dexter has been nominated and won various awards, alongside audience praise. In 1988, Dexter won the Stars de Demain Prize at Geneve Cineme Fete for The Ragged Rawney. Wild Bill received nominations for a BAFTA, Best International Feature at the Chicago Film Festival, Breakthrough British Filmmaker at the London Critics Circle Film Awards and was the winner of Best First Feature Film from the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain. Sunshine on Leith was nominated for a Scottish BAFTA, with Bohemian Rhapsody being a nominee for Best Foreign Film at the David di Donatello Awards. Rocketman also earned nominations at the BAFTAs, Cannes Film Festival, and Hollywood Critics Association Midseason Awards.
