Misha Glenny

British journalist, author, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence speaker, Misha Glenny is best known for being an underworld investigator who has exptert specialisms in southeastern Europe, global organised crime, and cyber security.

Formerly educated at an independent school, Magdalen College School, in Oxford, Misha studied at the University of Bristol and Prague’s Charles University before becoming Central Europe Correspondent for The Guardian and later the BBC. He specialised in reporting on the Yugoslav wars in the early 1990s that followed the breakup of Yugoslavia.

As a author of a number of books, including The Rebirth Of History: Eastern Europe in the Age of Democracy, The Fall of Yugoslavia: The Third Balkan War, The Balkans: Nationalism, War and the Great Powers, DarkMarket: Cyberthieves, Cybercops and You, Nemesis: One Man and the Battle for Rio and McMafia: A Journey Through the Global Criminal Underworld. Three of his books were focused on Central and Eastern Europe, and in McMafia, he wrote that international organised crime could account for 15% of the world’s GDP.

Glenny advised the US and some European governments on policy issues and for three years ran an NGO helping with the reconstruction of Serbia, Macedonia and Kosovo. Glenny appeared in the 2011 documentary film, Raw Opium: Pain, Pleasure, Profits. Since January 2012, Glenny has been visiting professor at Columbia University’s Harriman Institute, teaching a course on ‘crime in transition’.

In 2017, the BBC/AMC began creating a miniseries based on Misha’s 2008 book, McMafia, to which Glenny served as an executive producer. The drama was shown in January 2018 at a prime time slot on BBC One, and thus received raved reviews.

During his fascinating career, Glenny has been recognised for his expertise and specialist work in a number of ways. He won the 1993’s Sony Gold Award for his ‘outstanding contribution to broadcasting’, and was the winner of Digital Security Journalist of the Year, to name a few.
