A famed former snooker player known for his charismatic personality and ability with cue in hand, John Virgo has graced some of the most high-profile snooker tournaments in the world, both as a player and commentator.
John achieved his highest ranking of tenth in the world in 1979-80 despite only turning professional at the age of 30. Though at the time, this meant he was one of the youngest players in snooker. Just a year after joining the pro circuit in 1976, he made the semi finals where he would lose to the tournament winner, Patsy Fagan. His playing career would yield four non-ranking tournament wins but it was for his trick shots and comedic impressions of his counterparts that made him particularly famous.
It was as a BBC commentator and co-presenter of TV game show, Big Break alongside Jim Davidson that made him a much-loved media personality. His sense of humour, passion for the game and popular catchphrase “where’s the cue ball going?” which he would shout out whenever a cue ball looks like it might be set for a pocket, has ensured his status as one of the most renowned snooker commentators. John Virgo’s autobiography, Say Goodnight, JV was also released in 2018, sharing thoughts from his 40 year career in snooker.
Having mixed with some of the greatest pros of his time, including the likes of Dennis Taylor, Jimmy White and Alex Higgins, he recounts the experiences of his time in the game, his greatest triumphs and how he earned the nickname ‘Mr Perfection’.
Discussing a remarkable career that has seen him travel by concorde, meet royalty and become UK champion, John talks about the highs and lows, from gambling problems to hilarious anecdotes from his colourful career. On the after dinner speaking circuit, John offers a similarly lighthearted commentary on his life in the world of snooker, with particular focus on his achievements in snooker and in the media. Without a doubt one of the game’s greats, John Virgo is a must-have for corporate, charity and sporting occasions.
