Paul Robinson is an English former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper for top clubs: Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur, Blackburn Rovers, and Burnley. In a career that spanned two decades, he became a fan favourite and has since become a popular choice for events as an after dinner speaker, due to his open and honest approach when discussing his football career.
Starting his successful career in the Leeds United youth team, Robinson went on to sign his first professional contract for their senior team, where he became a prevalent player. Whilst at the club, Robinson became the number one goalkeeper and made 95 Premier League appearances for his team. In 2004, he made the move to Tottenham Hotspurs where he became the third of five goalkeepers to score a goal in the Premier League.
Entering the most prolific period of his career in 2008, Paul Robinson joined Blackburn Rovers where he made 189 appearances over seven years. In his debut game he achieved a win, preventing three goals from Everton, and later in the season was awarded Man of the Match in a game against Wigan Athletic. He finished the season with an impressive twelve clean sheets. Experiencing a mixture of highs and lows, inlcuding a complicated back injury, Robinson left the team for a brief stint at Burnley, before announcing his retirement in 2017.
An honour for any sportsman, Robinsons was called up to the England U21 squad in 1999, making 14 appearances before his international senior debut in 2003. In his first performance for the starting team, he achieved a win over Iceland and kept four out of five clean sheeting in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He remained the number one goalkeeper for England in the EUFA Euro 2008 campaign.
As a much loved player, the Leeds United Supports’ Club voted him as the Player of the Year in 2003. After a successful period in 2000 he was announced as the Premier League Player of the Month for November, whilst at Leeds United. Again for the 2010-2011 season, he won the Player of the Year, however, this time for his then club Blackburn Rovers.
Turning his experience on the pitch into motivating, inspirational and humorous discussions, Paul Robinson is an expert when it comes to after dinner speaking. He can engage an audience of all ages, whether they are a football fan or not, as he can adapt his conversation to suit the occasion.
