Vandana Shiva

Vandana Shiva is a highly regarded environmental activist and trained physicist. Passionate about the world around us, Vandana has founded a number of organisations and movements to raise awareness of environmental issues and to better the future of science. A knowledgeable individual, Vandana has achieved a Bachelor of Science, a Masters in Philosophy of Science and a PhD in Philosophy. Upon her graduation, Vandana followed her passions and began work as a researcher for the Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institute of Management.

From that point on, Vandana has forged a reputation as a passionate environmental activist and has researched extensively into topics such as bioethics, biodiversity, biotechnology and genetic engineering. Back in 1982, Vandana founded her first organisation, founding the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology. Determined to make a positive change in the world, Vandana started this foundation as an avenue for high quality and independent research which brought attention to pressing social and environmental issues of the time.

Vandana later went on to found Navdanya, an environmental movement that focused on promoting organic and Fairtrade produce. Vandana is also the founder of Bija Vidyapeeth, a college that promotes sustainable living to its students. A role model in environmental responsibility, Vandana has been highly acclaimed for the work that she has performed. She has been coined one of the Top Seven Most Powerful Women on the Globe by Forbes Magazine and recognised as an ‘environmental hero’ by Time Magazine.

Vandana has also claimed the coveted Alternative Nobel Prize, the Order of the Golden Ark, the Earth Day International Award and the Lennon ONO Grant for Peace award. Other prominent awards include the Prism of Reason Award, the MIDORI Prize for Biodiversity, the Sydney Peace Prize and the Global 500 Award of UN. Today, Vandana is sought as a keynote speaker for a variety of public events.
