David Lammy is a well-known politician who has worked within British politics for over twenty-five years. Throughout his career, David has championed equality and held senior positions, including Deputy Prime Minister, Secretary of State for Justice, and Lord Chancellor. He has also broken barriers within politics, becoming the first Black Lord Chancellor in UK history. In 2020, David was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and Shadow Lord Chancellor. He was then promoted to Shadow Foreign Secretary within Keir Starmer's opposition leadership team. Following the Labour Party's general election victory, he was made Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs. In 2025, he was named Deputy Prime Minister, Secretary of State for Justice, and Lord Chancellor under Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Alongside his government positions, David has published key works including 'Out of the Ashes: Britain After the Riots' and 'Tribes: How Our Need to Belong Can Make or Break Society'. He also led and published the landmark independent government review, 'The Lammy Review', which examined the treatment and outcomes of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic individuals within the criminal justice system in England and Wales. Additionally, he played a key role in bringing attention to the Windrush scandal, campaigning for justice and the rights of those affected. For his continued contributions to politics and public life, David has been named on the 100 Great Black Britons index twice.
