Reverend Richard Coles

FORMER COMMUNARD, CO-PRESENTER OF BBC RADIO 4'S 'SATURDAY LIVE', CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTHAMPTON & VICAR OF FINEDON

Reverend, radio presenter, media personality and British icon, Richard Coles is best known as a significant leader within the Church of England. His likeable and charismatic personality makes him the perfect speaker to attend a whole variety of corporate events and functions to discuss the LGBT community, diversity and inclusion topics and to offer interesting insights into the media career.

Unexpectedly, Richard’s career in the limelight began in the music industry. As half of The Communards, he went on to release three UK Top 10 hits including the best-selling single of 1986, Don’t Leave Me This Way. Combining his new-found career within the media with the passion he discovered for religion in his late twenties, Cole narrated the Style Council’s film JerUSAlem and began writing for publications including the Times Literary Supplement and the Catholic Herald.

After studying theology at King’s College London, Richard began training for the priesthood in the Church of England. He was ordained in 2005 and became a curate for both St Botolph’s Church in Boston and St Paul’s Church in Knightsbridge. Having become the inspiration for Adam Smallbone in BBC Two sitcom Rev., Richard very quickly developed a budding fanbase and became the vicar of St Mary the Virgin in Finedon.

Throughout his career in the Church of England, Richard sat on the board of Wellingborough Homes offering community support and housing to the Borough of Wellingborough. He also released his own comedic book entitled Lives of the Improbable Saints, was awarded with an honorary doctorate by the University of Northampton and became a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and King’s College London.

Alongside his career within religion, Richard is also a highly regarded broadcaster and media star. He has presented across the BBC Radio networks including a Radio 3 series entitled Out in the World: A Global Gay History. He has also made several appearances on Have I Got News for You, presented Songs of Praise and became a contestant on BBC’s prized Strictly Come Dancing.

As the only reverend to have released a number one, best selling single, Richard Coles is one of the most unique speakers on our roster. With a huge, evergrowing social media following, he is an incredibly popular choice to attend a whole variety of corporate events and functions. As an openly gay member of the church, Richard is keen to discuss issues within diversity, inclusion and the LGBT community along with insightful anecdotes from his media and broadcasting career.
