Born in London but raised in Surrey, Nicholas left school to embark on his journalism career at the age of 17. In 1964, he started working for the Surrey Mirror, before moving to the Evening Standard in 1968. From there, he spent seven years working for the Financial Times as well as a short stint with The Daily Telegraph. Nicholas worked his way through the ranks, until he was appointed Business Editor of Now magazine, in 1979. Despite such a successful journalism career, Nicholas was offered a role at the BBC in 1981, which sparked his career in television.
In his first position on television, Nicholas presented local news updates for the north of England, on such topics as general news and industrial stories. He then moved to ITN, where he spent a decade working on Midnight Special, The Parliament Programme and the ITN Lunchtime News.
