Michael Buerk is a British broadcaster, event host and award-winning journalist best known for his work as the TV host for BBC TV News and the flagship BBC series the “Ten o’clock News”. Working as a radio and TV presenter since the early 1970’s Michael Buerk also works as a compere at conferences, event host and lecturer and chairs discussion panels on the latest moral issues facing modern society.
As a TV host Buerk has also presented the peak time BBC series about emergencies and the emergency services, 999 his work as a radio and TV presenter has seen him present a unique Radio 4 show The Choice as well as ITV’s archaeological programme Britain’s Secret Treasures. Buerk’s work as an event host revolves largely around his own areas of personal interest, which include international politics and foreign affairs as well as the environment, history and arechaeology.
As well as gaining a great deal of respect for his work as a radio and TV presenter Buerk is well known for his charity work; he has appeared on a celebrity version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire with fellow TV host Jennie Bond, to raise money for the children’s charity NCH. It was also Buerk’s coverage of the Ethiopian famine as a TV host for the BBC that inspired the Band Aid collective to hold the first Live Aid concert.
Michael Buerk has gained many awards for his work as a radio and TV presenter, in 1984 he was awarded the prestigious Television Journalist of the Year prize by the Royal Television Society as well an award for foreign reporting, he has an honorary Doctorate from the University of Surrey and has been awarded a Golden Nymph from the Monte Carlo Television and Film Festival. His longstanding position as a newsreader and TV host for the BBC saw him presented with a BAFTA award for his factual broadcasting as well as a James Cameron Memorial award for ‘journalism that combined moral vision and professional integrity’.
