John Hammond

John didn’t so much choose weather as a career – he was a helpless victim of its wonder. He was taken with the ambition to be a weatherman from an early age.

After graduating with a Masters in Meteorology, employment in the Met Office brought such diverse experience as forecasting for RAF pilots, advising local authorities on road gritting operations and being an expert witness at weather-related court cases. He’s also been the author of a number of research papers and articles on meteorology and the communication of weather.

John’s been privileged to be at the forefront of communicating weather on TV and radio for more than two decades on ITV and BBC and has become a familiar face and voice on BBC News, Countryfile and BBC Horizon.

Thousands of broadcasts to millions of people; and John is now using his insight and enthusiasm in a new direction  – to better explain the impact of everyday weather in a way that helps busy people make clear choices. With fellow broadcaster and business partner, Sara Thornton, in 2017 John launched ‘weathertrending’.

As well as providing videos, blogs and commentary for ‘weathertrending’, John continues to be a freelance expert meteorologist, presenter, trainer, and public speaker. John is taking on speaking engagements as duo alongside his business partner, Sara Thornton.

“Just a note to thank John for his presentation on weather forecasting to the board and top executives. His enthusiasm for the subject certainly came through. The presentation was pitched at the right level for a technically based audience, who are not experts in the topic. The examples he chose interested people from both sides of the Atlantic. The feedback from colleagues was very positive – they enjoyed the topic and learned a lot. To Champions, thanks also for your efforts in efficiently handling the arrangements and communications between the three of us beforehand.”
