Matt is a London born British actor who trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre school after graduating from Durham University with an honours degree in Classics and Philosophy. Matt has extensive experience across the industry from theatre, to television and film. He is most well known for his role as Atticus Aldridge in Downton Abbey opposite Lily James and for his starring role in Breakfast at Tiffany’s at the Theatre Royal Haymarket and National TourL opposite Pixie Lott.
Recently he starred in the UK tour of The Frightened Lady and 2019 will see him playing the lead in the stage adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes as well as James in the feature film The Sonata.
Matt also produces and writes feature films. His first project, Love is Thicker than Water, a quirky coming-of-age romantic comedy, was released in cinemas in 2018 to great critical acclaim. Currently in development is the feature film Pitchipoi, a first hand account of a young boy’s fight for survival in Poland during World War II; All the Tea in China, a hero epic about one man’s work to break the Chinese tea monopoly for the East India Company; and a number of television dramas.
Away from acting and the industry, Matt runs a successful educational consultancy, Equilibrium – The Learning Company; is an ambassador for the London based homeless charity, Centrepoint; and a keen supporter of Great Ormond Street Hospital, being a GOSH baby himself.
As an enthusiastic and dedicated motivational speaker and coach, Matt has extensive experience, from hosting Great Ormond Street’s carol concert or recently opening their new wing alongside Princess Katherine, to hosting events, panel discussions and awards ceremonies to running extensive educational seminars and individual mentoring sessions through Equilibrium.
Matt has first hand experience of overcoming severe illness, both as a baby and more recently as an adult, when he was semi-paralysed for six months by an auto-immune condition; and his career as an actor has taught him not only how to accept and overcome extraordinary levels of ‘failure’ and near misses, but moreover how to turn these experiences into positives and use them to form future rungs in an ever extending ladder upwards. He keenly believes that every kind of experience can be re-framed to find a constructive way to build from it and actively pursues this approach in his own life.
Matt rides a motorbike, when it’s not in the garage, loves cooking, photography and all aspects of men’s fashion and he lives in London with his wife, the singer-songwriter Lial, whose new EP, Heart Scars was released to great critical acclaim in 2017.
