Laurie Brett is a Scottish actress best recognised for her role in Eastenders as Jane Beale and as Christine Mulgrew in Waterloo Road.<\cite> Also appearing in many productions on London’s Westend Stage from Les Misérables to The Rocky Horror Show and Smokey Joe’s Cafe.
Laurie needed an Equity Card to be a paid professional actress in the UK so therefore started her career in a travelling circus. She joined Circo Magico Italiano and travelled around Mexico and Central America before returning and making a name for herself on Westend stage. Her roles on Westend included playing a prostitute in Les Misérables, appearing in the UK tour of The Rocky Horror Show as Magenta where she starred alongside Jason Donovan and in the musical Smokey Joe’s Cafe.
Laurie made her first appearance in EastEnders in June 2004 after being spotted by Casting Director, Kat Collins, during her performance in Les Misérables. Initially signing a three year contract and then signing for a further year in 2010. Laurie joined the BBC’s drama Waterloo Road on the 15th March 2012 in a role that allowed her to speak her native accent. Laurie continued to appear in the second half of series nine while also returning to EastEnders.
Laurie is an avid charity supporter making various television appearances in aid of charity, participating in the 2007, 2008 and 2009 telethon appeals for Children In Need. On February 2010 she appeared on The Weakest Link alongside her co-stars and former co-stars, Laurie donated all her winnings to Breast Cancer campaigns and Alzheimer’s disease research.
