British actor and Coronation Street star Johnny Briggs MBE is remembered by most for his thirty year tenure on the ITV soap playing the uncompromising ladies’ man Mike Baldwin.
Making his first appearance on the street in 1976 Johnny Briggs MBE quickly became a staple on the show and his rivalry with fellow British actor William Roache MBE was infamous; numerous marriages, steamy affairs and more than one long-lost son populated Mike’s life on the Street and, a distinguished and versatile actor, Briggs portrayed them all with a frank, professional and stylish talent.
Leaving the show in 2006 after his character died of a heart attack following several months of Alzheimer’s Briggs was awarded a lifetime achievement award at the 2006 British Soap Awards for his services to television, popularity amongst audiences and talent as an actor.
Outside his appearances on the Street, Johnny Briggs MBE also appeared in a number of other British television series’ including Crossroads, Echo Beach and Holby City. Though many expected Briggs to retire as an actor following his departure from Coronation Street he continues frequently to make guest appearances on British television productions and even turned up as a ghost in an episode of Coronation Street broadcast for the charity Text Santa.
Alongside his career as a television actor Johnny Briggs MBE has also starred in a variety of feature films, though he is most well-known for his appearances in the British comedy films Carry On… Up the Khyber, Carry On… Behind and Carry On… England.
