Andrew Castle

RETIRED BRITISH TENNIS PROFESSIONAL TURNED LEADING BBC COMMENTATOR & RADIO PRESENTER

Andrew Castle has a career history unlike any other – former professional tennis player, radio presenter and television broadcaster, he is a man of many talents. Most prominently, Andrew is an entertaining after-dinner speaker.

Born in Surrey, Andrew was educated at Millfield School on a tennis scholarship, after winning the UK under-12 national tennis championships. His second scholarship led Andrew to study in Kansas for a marketing degree. With years of tennis experience from his early life, Andrew soon taught tennis at the Wichita Racquet Club, holding lessons for players of all ages.

In 1986, Andrew dedicated his life to professional tennis playing. In his first season, he lasted until the third round at the Queens Club, before winning three tour doubles titles in the following year, 1987. The next season at the US Open saw Andrew dominate the court. During the championship he reached the third round, beating two prominent tennis players, Jimmy Brown and David Pate, in doing so.

Despite his youth as a player, Andrew showed immense skill and dedication, cultivated throughout his two scholarships. In his public speaking, he explores this experience of success and invites the audience to embrace their own personal development.

Taking to the Olympics, Andrew represented his country in 1988 and 1992, at the Seoul Olympic Games and Barcelona Olympic Games. At the peak of his career, Andrew won three major events, including the Seoul Open, South Korea in 1988, Rye Brook, USA in 1988 and Adelaide, Australia in 1990. He ranked 80 in the singles and 45 in the doubles, making him the UK’s #1 in singles tennis in 1986. Andrew retired from active playing in 1992.

Andrew became a household name after taking the media world by storm. Starting as a commentator for Sky, he joined the GMTV morning show in 2000, a role which he held for an entire decade. Following his presenting at the Aegon Championships, the Davis Cup and the French Open, Andrew and his commentating team were nominated for a BAFTA.

As an after-dinner speaker, Andrew is as charismatic and dedicated on the stage as he was on the court, and later on the screen. Audiences are captivated by his presentations, not just because he is a recognisable face but because Andrew is an enigmatic, entertaining speaker.
