After retiring from rugby David went to go and work for the family business where he was promoted to the position of commercial director. David also occasionally appears on the BBC, taking part in half-time analysis during Scotland rugby matches.

In 2017 Doddie was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and so he set up his own charity to raise awareness. Appearing on the One Show he claimed that the chairty had raised an amazing £1 million for the disease. Due to all of Doddie’s hard work he was awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2019 New Years Honours.
