LGBT+ rights advocate and former rugby union player, Ben Cohen MBE is an English after dinner speaker whose range of topics make him a popular choice nationwide. After starting his professional career in 1996 with the Northampton Saints, he went on to represent his country internationally as a winger. Since his retirement, Ben has turned his attention to promoting equal rights and combating bullying by raising his voice at business and sporting events.
In his early career, Ben started playing rugby with Northampton Old Scouts FRC at the age of 12. As Ben only has 30% to 33% of his hearing ability in each ear, he dedicated his time to increasing sports accessibility for younger deaf players, starting in his youth to the present day. As a passion of Ben’s, he discusses topics on accessibility in his public speaking, to raise awareness for the sometimes limiting nature of sport.
While playing for the Northampton Saints from the age of 17, the 1996 and 1997 season saw Ben debut against Treorchy. After such a successful season, he went on to feature prominently in the following seasons. The pinnacle point during this period was Northamptom’s victory over Munster in the 2000 Heineken Cup Final.
At the height of his active playing career, Ben established himself as a key player. Such highlights include representing France from 2007 to 2009 and England from 2009. During the 2003 Rugby World Cup, Ben made a name for himself as a formidable player, which resulted in the England national team winning the title.
As an advocate for victims of bullying, Ben is an icon for young LGBT+ players nationwide. After witnessing the damaging effects of homophobic abuse, he set up The Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation, which is “the world’s first foundation dedicated to raising awareness of the long-term, damaging effects of bullying, and funding those doing real-world work to stop it”. Ben invests a great portion of his time into the foundation.
