Former Royal Marines Commando, Invictus Games medalist, TV presenter, media personality and well known public speaker, JJ Chalmers is a highly entertaining and inspirational figure. After being severely injured from a bomb blast whilst serving as a Royal Marine in Afghanistan, JJ suffered life-changing injuries that led him to a long road of recovery.
However, not letting his injuries beat him, JJ underwent months of rehabilitation in order for him to compete in the Invictus Games, an international sports competition created by HRH The Duke of Sussex for wounded armed services personnelles. Taking part in the 2014 Invictus Games, JJ went on to win a gold medal for the Men’s IRecB1 Recumbent Circuit Race. He also won a medal for in Non-amputee Cycling, in the 1-mile Time Trial and in the 4 × 100m Mixed Relay race.
It was in 2016 that JJ returned to the Invictus Games, however this time not as a competitor, but as an Ambassador. He also got the opportunity to cover the games for media broadcasters the BBC. As a result of this, JJ has since continued to forge a career in the broadcasting world having hosted the 2012 Rio Paralympics for Channel 4, and presented the 2018 Commonwealth Games live on the Gold Coast for BBC One.
JJ has since appeared on a number of panelist and documentary shows such as The Last Leg and The Superhumans Show, as well as featuring in the BBC’s coverage of Remembrance at the Cenotaph. In 2017, JJ began presenting sports segments on the BBC News Channel and BBC Sports. During speaking events, JJ often discusses subjects such as drive and determination, peak performance, overcoming adversity, mental and physical resilience and never giving up. JJ uses his own experience and inspirational story to motivate others to achieve their goals.
