Giles Scott is a hugely talented sailor and Olympic gold medallist. His continual perseverance and commitment to the sport has gained him vast respect throughout the international sailing world. Giles is determined and ambitious, campaigning for a second Olympic medal at Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, alongside his goal to bring the America’s Cup home with British America’s Cup Challenger, INEOS Team UK
Giles first started sailing when he was just six years old. He was thrown out onto the water in a small dingy called an Optimist, at Grafham Water. He soon progressed onto another class of boat called a Topper and at fourteen Giles had already won his first National Championships.
He continued to thrive at sailing and soon moved into the Laser Radial Class, where he won a bronze medal at both the World and European Laser Radial Youth Championships. Giles’ Junior and Youth career concluded with victory at the ISAF Youth Worlds 2005 in South Korea. Soon Giles was ready for the next challenge and joined the Olympic Finn class.
Within his first year, Giles had already achieved 14th at the World Championships, going on to win the 2011 Finn European and World Championships. He became Ben Ainslie’s biggest rival for Team GB selection, representing in the Finn, at the London 2012 Olympics Games. Although Ainslie won the battle, Giles moved on quickly to join Team Korea, achieving a surprising third place at the San Francisco America’s Cup World Series Event. This led to Giles joining Luna Rossa’s Sailing Team for the 34th America’s Cup.
Giles used his defeat by Ainslie as motivation to push himself for Olympic glory in the next Games. His unrelenting commitment to the Finn meant that in 2014 he was dominating the fleet, gaining seven consecutive regatta victories. He soon became untouchable and won his second Finn World Championship later that same year. Giles comfortably gained a place at the Rio 2016 Olympics Games in 2016 and with ruthless determination went on to win Gold in the Finn class. After Giles’ extraordinary Olympic achievement, he rejoined Land Rover BAR and relocated to Bermuda, ahead of the 35th America’s Cup.
He is determined to make British sailing history with the British team INEOS TEAM UK by bringing the America Cup back to Britain for the first time.
