Blair Tuke is a prominent 49er skiff sailor and Olympic competitor, representing New Zealand. As one half of the hugely successful New Zealand Olympic team, Blair has become an iconic sportsman in the country and around the world. Having competed at Olympic games, world championships and more, Blair has enjoyed significant success. London 2012 saw Blair lineup alongside Peter Burling for the first time. They were the youngest team at the games, yet still managed to take home a Silver medal for New Zealand, to earn the country’s 100th Olympic medal.
This experience was the beginning of a historic purple patch for the duo. They became the first sailors to win four consecutive 49er class World Championships between 2013 and 2016. The International Sailing Federation even announced the duo as the ISAF Rolex World Male Sailors of the Year in 2015. Next up was the Rio Olympic Games where Blair and Peter co-captained the New Zealand team. Winning by a 43 point margin and with two races to spare – they racked up the most points at an Olympic games since the 1968 Olympics. They followed this up with a historic America’s Cup victory. The duo also remain unbeaten in all major 49er regattas internationally.
Their efforts once again saw them steeped with accolades in their home country, with Blair and Peter as the 49er skiff sailing team being named as the New Zealand Sports Team of the Year at the Halberg Awards in 2016 after being nominated for the previous four years. Further honours followed for the feared duo include, as they were conferred as Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2017 New Years Honours.
In 2018, Blair embarked the race of a lifetime. Participating in the Volvo Ocean Race, Blair could have become the first sailor in history to nail down the elusive Triple Crown, finishing third overall with Spain’s team Mapfre in the closest finish of all time. Considered a sailing legend, Blair is a remarkably driven sportsman. Born to be on the sea, Blair has constantly strived to improve and become the greatest in the world. He has consistently bounced back, expertly dealing with pressure and adversity as well as committing to peak performance.
