Record Six-Times Masters Champion

Jack Nicklaus, nicknamed ‘The Golden Bear’, is a retired America professional golfer. Widely regarded as the greatest golfer of all time, he has won a staggering record eighteen major championships, whilst also producing nineteen second-place and nine third-place finishes, over the span of twenty-five years.

Nicklaus focussed on the major championships, and played a selective schedule of regular PGA Tour events, yet still finished with seventy-three victories, third on the all-time list behind Sam Snead, and Tiger Woods.

After winning the US Amateur in 1959 and 1961, and also challenging for the 1960 US Open, Nicklaus turned professional at the age of just twenty-one at the end of 1961. His first professional win came in a major championship, when he defeated Palmer by three shots in 1962.

This win over Palmer began the on-course rivalry between the two professional golfers. A few years down the line in 1966, Nicklaus won the Masters Tournament for the second year in a row, becoming the first golfer to achieve this distinction, and also won The Open Championship, completing his career slam of major championships. at age 26, he became the youngest to do so at the time. In 1968 and 1969, Nicklaus did not win a major tournament. He then went on to win the Open Championship again in 1970.

Between 1971 and 1980, Nicklaus won an additional nine major championships, overtook Bobby Jones’ record of thirteen majors, and became the first player to complete double and triple career slams of golf’s four professional major championships.

At the age of forty-six, Nicklaus claimed his eighteenth final major championship at the 1986 Masters Tournament, becoming the championships oldest winner. Nicklaus joined the Senior PGA Tour in January of 1990, when he became eligible, and by April of 1996, had won ten of the tour’s tournaments, including eight of that tour’s major championships.

Nicklaus has additionally also taken part in various other activities, including golf course design, charity work and booking writing. He is also a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, and has helped design courses such as Harbour Town Golf Links. His golf course design company is the largest of the kind in the world.
